Hi Will.

How hot did you get it? Did the dog sizzle slightly when a wet finger was applied?

You can afford to apply more heat if you want - provided it's applied with a small gentle flame, the plastic fan blades will be perfectly ok. Also, provided you don't blast the dog for ages, the crackshaft spigot won't get too hot either - it'll take a LOT of heat before it conducts right through the spigot to where the oil seal is. (My 'shaft was barely luke-warm when the dog was too hot to touch.)

ahem to get back on topic

can you get a 10mm and an 8mm spanner in behind the fan to undo the screws in the plastic?

take the plastic fan off and give it( the flange at the bottom of the dog) some beans with the heat, the fiercer the heat the better

Dont pussy about with a wee flame 200c is what you need to loosen locktite and the like

ther faster you get the heat into the taper the better as it will expand before the heat soaks thru to the crank and could dammage the oil seal, but given the mass of the crank nose and the normal operating temp of a seal you should be fine

cool off with a damp rag as soon as you get it off.

Thanks Sean, I'll have a look this weekend if i can get to the back of the fan, not sure...then i'll turn up the heat

failing that, i've heard that proper old 3in1 penetrating oil might do the trick - i'm not certain if there's loctite in there - i'm not sure how long since the fan's come been off - maybe since 1978 (dyane M28 in there) thinking about it - it had 123 put in before i bought it, so maybe 5 or 6 years...

Take a pin wich fits nice and easy into the hole of the fan where the bolt comes out, (don't forget to unscrew and remove the bolt). The pin has to stick out of the hole so you can slam it with a hammer.

Now take a serious hammer (no not a slegde hammer) and beat on te pin seriously, after each slam feel of the fan comes loose, after 5 or six hits max. the fan will come off.

No harm to the engine the crankshaft can easelly handle this....

Instead of a pin I use the pipe wrench wich I also use to unscrew the 14mm bolt.

p.s. I never heat the fanhouse/crankshaft, you then can easily do damage to the crankshaft seal or fan (house).

but presuming he has tried all that - never yet come accross one that needed heat

( its the sharp ringing crack of metal on metal -no pussyfooting about with rubber, raw hide or copper hammers)
