the technique is not so much to distort the boss thats locked on the crank taper but to send a shockwave thru it. use a tight fitting metal bar and a sharp ringing crack with a metal hammer at 90* to the the crank,and quite close to the starter dog.

oil or grease on re assembly will have no effect on the grip of the taper apart from stopping the corrosion thats causing you problems.

the occasional tap of removal will do no dammage to the fan boss, they fail due to the stresses highliting the weakness in the manufacture over tightening the alternator and revving the nuts off the engine will do more dammage.

Ok, went out again...

BANG...BANG...BANG...

Nothing.

So, got blowtorch, fired 'er up, turned it down until it was a glorified cigarette-lighter flame, and then played this under the starting dog, turning the fan every 20 seconds or so so's the surrounding plastic didn't get too hot. Did this for a few minutes until the dog became just about hot enough to lightly sizzle when a damp finger was placed on it, and then...

TAP...TAP...Plop.

had the same problem, used the old 1/2 teng tool socket set extension, bit of a wiggle and a few heavy swearwords and of she came, mind you, when i went to remove it about 2 days later, was just as much of a bastard

never had a problem getting the fan off untill going to reg day when the fan snapped off. i was at full chat 85ish when a wanker pulled out on me and i had to let off and BRAKE. there was a bang and lots of clatering noise as the fan rolled around the cowling luckly not damaging the oil cooler. mangaged to get the remains of the fan off using a wheel brace and camping mallet. put the new 1 on and carried on to reg day. come to think of it me and the acad dont have much luck going to reg day. last year 1 of the driveshafts came adrift just after the engine bay paint job. i broke off 2 bolts and smashed the gearbox where the caliper is bolted on. since then no problems went to CZ world meet and back ok but the van hasnt been out since international last year. miss driving it and getting it out next year

I've never had a problem getting the fan off. I've got a steel bar which fits in the starter dog; a couple of taps with my copper mallet (or whatever hammer is handy) and off it comes. I've never greased it.

learning curve...?...!!!
