Post Re: Crank shaft rebuilt
Hi Viking,
any idea why the big end shells in the pic are about twice as wide as they need to be? :?:

From what I've seen, one of the problems with rebuilding these crankshafts is managing to take them apart without destroying the interference fit between the crank pins and the central web.
Because Citroen chilled the pins in liquid nitrogen before pressing the assembly together, there's a good chance of the surfaces galling as they're pulled apart, with a consequent reduction in the degree of interference fit on reassembly.

I had a crankshaft go out of register when running in a new race camshaft on the bench a few years back. That one had been taken apart (for illegal balancing, I think ) and was only running at 2,500 rpm, with no load, when it locked up.
As soon as the main crankcase bolts/nuts were slackened, it freed off, but it wasn't worth risking it in any engine, never mind a race one.

There's also the small problem of alignment, with three separate parts to juggle.
STP seem capable of doing that to very fine tolerances, though...

ken.

It looks like 2 big ends together maybe for illustration only.
Yes I have several emails with Maurice at STP some time ago ending up ordering crank shaft from him but suddenly the price increased dramatically. Today his web price is still the same but when you order, you get a different price. http://www.citroentuning.de/ke_cv.htm
Without any doubt, Maurice is a craftsman knowing his trade but a horrible business man with little understanding of dealing with the public. His crank shafts are top quality but and I would like to order from him but it is beyond me. It is a very different story if you are in to racing, he’ll look after you but I’m not there yet. In a couple of years I’ll hopefully get back in to 2cv cross so maybe then we can do business. In the meantime I’ll keep searching for someone else. Also your description of how Citroën made the crank shaft is spot on. I don’t think that anybody else can master that but you never know.

what i dont get is he balances it to 0.2g then has to split it a 2nd time to fit the con rod possibly upsetting the balance and or register

might have to speak to him to find out how he does it
