Post Re: Performance Loss...
We are probably getting to the stage where the carby top gasket should be modified to blank off the vacuum choke thingo that can't be fixed and is a good source of air leaks. Maybe next time I take off the carby, I'll just get metal filler a close the vacuum hole and the two screw holes and chuck the choke pulloff gadget.

If you want to check the operation of the choke pulloff, have the engine running and pull on the lever hook. If there is no resistance, the diaphragm is stuffed and sucking in air.

Performance there - but takes time!

i actually cant remember step by step everything we did today spanners, but quite abit of fiddly stuff!

Cleaned out the float chambers in the old carb... as they were... well... full of crap!
reset the points gap and reset the timing!

new carb from... another engine!

anything else? ooh yes i broke down and all my attention going to the wet carb meant i didnt notice the the loose/hanging off LT lead onto the coil...

that was untill i sat in the car for an hour, got recovered back to spanners' for him to pop the bonnet and in about 5 seconds say "she'll start now"

so i feel quite guilty due to the fact something i should have immediately spotted... i didnt... and basically wasted an extra 2+ hours of Spanners' time, but these things happen at the end of the day..

anyways, back onto her running... there was an immediate difference with the new carb, although acceleration is still a little hesitant, she now runs ALOT better and once upto speed... she goes! (when the coil leads are connected ;) )

but a vast improvement, new coil tomorrow hopefully, and get the carb jets cleaned out etc, and she should be spot on!

Thankyou Very Much Spanners :) and im sure you'll see her again one day :) you'll probably just keep alot of distance or poke her with a stick!

Post Re: Performance Loss...
well, my timing was too advanced, so that had abit of spanners' treatment, then we cleaned out the float chambers in the carb... found some ancient findings in there, possibly from when the dyane was still running as there was metal in the carb... so that was cleaned out etc, turns out my carb never had a choke let off valve thingy... and then after a few trial runs, we swapped over to a carb from a spare engine, with immediate changes, still a little hesitation but nothing compared to before... on the motorway she was doing 79 on the flat (satnav) and still holding uphill... well that was untill she thought it would be great to throw off a coil lead when im in the middle lane... ended up coasting onto the hardshoulder of 1 sliproad too early.. looked round the car and couldnt see anything obviously hanging off.. believed it was a carb problem as it looked quit wet around the top and was worried the top plate was loose or something or it was drawing in air from somewhere etc...

so waited an hour, got recovered back to spaners' gaff! only for him to fiddle with the coil connections and come out with "she'll start now"... great news that was... never felt so embarresed! the good thing being it wasnt a carb problem... the bad thing being the fact it was something i should have noticed immediately... anyways, just incase it was something else we left her ticking over for 15-20 mins, found out that my coil overheats big time, so spanners nicely chucked in a spare untill the new one arrives (was meant to be here today... but yet again, GSF = FAIL)

will give this carb and good clean and a blast with the airline to make sure all is good, and give her a nice good daily thrash down the dually later ;)

well in all fairness... he asked me if it was something that could be repaired... and me thinking it had a carb problem told him what i thought was wrong with it and he didnt even have a look at it... he seemed a nice bloke tho!
