Haven't gone for authentic vinyl roof lining but glued van lining felt/carpet to it instead.......

I didn't know about this option? I've got one of those thermal roof liners, had it for years and its great.

Still a slight puff of fumes so I gave up with the stud and managed to fit a nut and a bolt on the forward manifold fastening. One of the fins underneath seemed to have been chipped or something anyway so it just about allowed me to put an M6 nut and bolt, I think it was. It'll just have to do.

I did lots of little things while I was there, since I wasn't rushing in between shifts at work. My favourite little job was one thats annoyed me for years - the rattling light adjuster knob. I took it out and put electrical shrink wrap on it so it wont rattle. Two layers as I'm sure it'll wear through fast enough. Sweet silence... :)

Its a pinkish red unfortunately, the only colour I had that was big enough.

Ian, you do know that there should be a grommet in that bracket?
Although it often ends up not where it should be, but parked on the rod close to the bulkhead.
That's often a good indicator of a chassis change that's been carried out with insufficient attention to detail...

Aha, thanks Ken. Is that the squishy foam thing that seemed to be being used as a grommet on the bulkhead? That would make sense. I've had this Deuche for the best part of 20 years now and its always had that squishy bit going through the bulkhead and a rattle by the knob. Its actually taken me this long to do something about it that didn't involve elastic bands. (Haha.)

It has had a chassis change, you're right. I am still frequently impressed by the quality of the job though, I wish I could remember the guy who did it. The chassis was a 'Wheels' one. He did lots of rust repairs to the body too, which is what I am often impressed by.

Does anyone know if the 'Wheels' chassis was a decent one or not?

That squishy thing is where it should be. The grommet that Ken is referring to is a standard type of rubber 'wiring' grommet.
I think the "Wheels" chassis was one of the best at the time. (They stopped making them quite a while ago). They did galvanised or non-galvanised. I have heard of the non-galvanised ones corroding quite badly at the very back end, where the rear bumper is mounted but I think everywhere else they are fine.

Today the clutch thrust bearing (I think) died in Chichester so the rest of the run home was 'crunchy'.
Tomorrow I shall be finding out what has actually died and fix it.
Or else.
