Post Re: The O/T thread!
Here's a dilemma. I need a winter car, one that's warm and dry, and won't worry me if it rusts.

There are two potential candidates at the moment, an AX 1.0 that'll cost me £600ish on the road with 3 months MOT, and does 45mpg. And a F*rd G@l@xy VR6 that'll cost me £330 on the road, full T&T, but only does 23mpg.

Being a geek I worked out the 'break even' point at which they will both have cost the same will be after just over 2000miles.

I've got an environmentally conscious hippy with a halo on one shoulder, and a horned petrol-head on the other. I do quite want an AX because they're cheap as chips, a diesel would be even better, but I can't find a cheap one at the moment.
The g@l@xy on the other hand is too cheap to turn down, would double up as both a van, and a camper, and it's 170hp.

What to do?

Neither just get something japaneese and cheaper then you wont care if it gets stuffed on the ice, petrol as they heat up faster and so the warmth kicks in faster. My 2cv blows warm air after about a mile the 2l HDi van takes a good 7-8 miles

At one time you could pick up a Saab 900 for under £500 which was an immensely brilliant winter car

Cheaper?! You don't get any cheaper. Yeah Japanese cars are good, but this is what I can find cheap, and both have qualities above being simply a good car.

£900 - must be something wrong with it (other than 15mpg).

Joolz, in my experience AXs are shit. My other half had one for a bit and I couldn't even fit in the bloody thing. The steering was reminiscent of an Atki Borderer and it wasn't even particularly economical. Buy the Ford. (And I speak as someone who hates Fords!)

If you have feet then you won't fit in an ax, but they are cheap to run, I reckon the mpg you quote is a bit pessimistic, but it does sound like a lot of dollar for such a gash car, I paid £150 for mine and it still had ticket on it and was virtually mint, we paid £200 for the 106 and that lasted us 5 years with only a few knocking driveshafts ever causing troubles. I'm looking at mx5s at the moment and they are cheap, plus they are correct-wheel-drive. I wouldn't buy a people carrier as they are both expensive and dreary to drive, and telling people how large the boot is on your car and how lovely and practical it can be is deeply depressing.

Russ, if you do buy an Mx-5, make sure it's a Eunos (the Japanese import model). These come with things like limited slip diffs and a few more toys in the cabin. But above all, buy one. I bought one when I sold the Dyane and it was tremendous fun. I'll be having another as soon as I can afford it.

Ax's are great fun. I had a 1.1 for a while until one day a tree fell on it. :(

If the Galaxy goes wrong it will be very expensive and they do quite often. My neighbour had one and it was always getting hauled home on the back of a transporter.

I proper love tits. Not even massive ones, just tits, nice tits. And minge, I'm a real fan of minge. And really nice ladies bottoms, the sort you just want to jam your head between and go BLUBLYBLUVLUBLUVLUBLUB. But then I 'Spose we all need a hobby.
