I have a 1987 D*lly which suffers from clutch slip but not all the time.It varies from a perfect clutch to a clutch that slips like crazy then back to a perfect clutch all on the same journey. The clutch is adjusted properly and the cable action is smooth and light.Having looked up into the bellhousing I can't see any signs of contamination and the clutch dust is dry.I know I will probably have to remove the engine and replace the clutch but just on the off chance that there is a simple and easily fixed reason for this behaviour I thought I'd ask the forum for your opinions.
Cheers Andy

It may be worth checking the cable is nice and free. If periodically it fails to fully return the clutch would slip. Cables do fray internally.

You need 10-15mm free play on the pedal

As 250 says, a frayed cable can sometimes give intermittent stickiness, seemingly behaving ok for most of the time.

My old kit car used to love sticking the accelerator pedal open on full throttle once every couple of weeks. What that did for my middle-aged-racer credentials doesn't bear repeating - flooring her away from the lights followed by a massive scream of over-revving Pinto as the clutch was dipped for second gear - with the throttle remaining wide open... I'd originally dismissed the cable as being guilty as it appeared smooth enough when tested by hand. But, frayed it was.
