Sorry I know this subject has been covered before, but let me just explain my problem. I have my MOT booked for tomorrow and was checking over my lights all ok, except no dipped beam.

I have tried:

Swapping over to spare light switch.

Fuses look ok.

Pulled out the two relays (I assume they have something to do with the lights) they seem old, so brushed off the crud and put them back. Do you think I need to replace them?

The bulbs seem fine - swapped one as it looked a little sooty inside the bulb.

So any other ideas? Much appreciated :)

Ah, the beloved Dim-Dip relays.

No, you need to take 'em out, then bridge across two of the terminals to remove them from the equation completely.

You'll need a short piece of wire with a male blade connector at both ends to bridge across the terminals.

Also unplug the diode, which is the item strapped to the flasher unit with a tie wrap.

and the silver resister on the fan shrouds...

be very careful when brdiging the connections you do it correctly and dont get destracted by the good looking nebghour, i wasnt concentrating and burnt my loom out doing this!

Thanks Ken, just to check, I bridge on BOTH of those relays?
The diode is behind the speedo panel?

Thanks toomany, I'll print that article off and read it until it sinks in.

What puzzles me is that its been fine for the last 9 months and now its all broken :? I have been fiddling with the speedo cable behind the instrument panel, do you think I may have disturbed anything there?

ben this is when owninf and knowing how to operate a volt meter (or as a mate of mine called it, a voltomoter :roll: ) comes in handy!

I think The Voltometer is a game on the local pier. You hold on to some vibrating bars until you can hold on no longer, like an electric shock - people pay for the pleasure :roll:

You are quite right, I do have a multimeter, and would love to learn how to use it.

No, only the one which has 5 wires connected to it, so please don't 'do a James'.
If you have the light switch in the dipped beam position as you fit the lead, that helps to confirm that you've done it correctly.

( I've taken a better picture today of one with the 'jumper' lead fitted, but won't be uploading it until this evening. )

The diode is inside that black plastic item, about 100mm long.
Unplug the wires and tie them back safely...

If you havnt sorted it out then two solutions:

1) Come and borrow my car and switch the number plates...its all working and then you can go and get an MOT and swap the number plates back again :lol:

2) Contact Phil Sayers who lives just around the corner and loves this kind of thing.....I found he will do or help a lot if you are armed with beer and Cornish Pasties. Phone/text me and I will pass on his number (hope thats OK Phil)

I guess I am reading this too late though as you probably went MOT shopping earlier on today.

But best of luck, hope it goes OK...let us know what happened.
