After having my car serviced and MOT'd by a specialist, he said i should check the valve clearances as it didnt seem to want to idle properly, almost "like it was on one and a half cylinders"
Well i checked them this morning and they were really really tight. so i opened them up to 0.25
I kept turning the engine over by hand and checked them twice and then twice again. put the rocker covers back on and it started on the button, whereas before it sometimes hesitated. so thats good. But how tappety is too tappety? because you can really notice them now... :?

Asking a question like that on here is likely to provoke a bit of controversy. I like them at .25 and find that they seem to run better.

I'll bet one millions euros that nobody can feel or measure the difference between 0,20 and 0,25. End of story
It is all in your mind.

Either will be better than having no gap. Why didnt the specialist do it when it was serviced?

because i needed it back the same day. And he did a load of other stuff on a list that needed doing to pass said MOT. Also, ive never done it before so i needed to learn. He can do it the next time around if its not right. Or change the engine if this one blows up because i have done it wrong.
