When your gearbox is noisy in first and reverse, it's just a bearing that's at fault, isn't it? Is it ever likely to go catastrophically wrong, or will it just stay noisy? I'm asking because my Acadiane's like this. I have got a spare gearbox, but I'm debating whether or not to change it before I go to France. My Mehari's old gearbox was similar, and I used it like that for several years, and a few long trips (Italy/French Nationals etc.) without problem.

The one I replaced in mine was noisy for five years, didn't make no difference to driving it was just noisy. I only replaced it during the rebuild because I had a low mileage one, but the noisy one was still serviceable.

erm! gearbox peened?

But remember there isnt (effective)synchro on first and reverse so you can make it crunch even if alls well. Try going into 2nd before taking first from a standstill

and ADJUST YOUR CLUTCH!

If its a "whiner" then the bearings may be worn-reverse is always noisy as its straight cut gears

Before any more damage is done, fix it. Why carry on only to ruin important gears etc. I have a sad collection of gear boxes where must parts are destroyed simply because the owners didn't care. Oh well, just stick another box in and put the rubbish aside. We can't carry on like that. If repairs are done early, the box can live much longer.

This is why, that it is so important to stop driving when a gear box begins to sing. It is tellling you, hey I'm sick fix me before all my internal bits are buggered. This tiny needle case bearing lost its pins and jammed between the teeth. The sad thing is that the pinion and crown wheel is Kaput too. A simply small repair would have prevented this damage. This box has little parts left to re-use. :x

I probably will change the box. Are Acad ratios the same as 2cv6?

Acadianes are harsh on Dyane box, run much better on evenly spaced 2cv6 ratios, always quieter too, broke my first diff. in a 12 month old Acadiane in 1982.

Heavily laden Acadiane with 2cv6 box made Boulogne Sur Mer to Most, CZ. a day trip!
