Post subject:  Crank/Flywheel lateral movement

Can anyone tell me how much lateral movement I should or should not have in my engine?
I have not stripped the crankcases down as the engine was running really well last summer.I have just refitted the flywheel and clutch and am shocked to find movement of roughly.056 thou. This seems a hell of a lot to me but I cant find any refrence to measure this.
I have taken the measurement by pushing the flywheel into the engine and taking a reading between the flywheel and the crankcase, then pulling the flywheel out from the engine and re measuring the gap-.056 thou difference between the two readings.
Any help would be greatly received.

The play is measured here on the front ''bearing'' max 0.14 mm but many engines have much more than that. They happily drive on for years but the day will come where the crank needs reconditioning.

Hi Viking,I read that on a previous thread. That measurement could be taken at the flywheel? If that is the case, and it is too much, what can I do?Are there thrust's inside or is the crank U/S? Or indeed the crankcase.

Dave,
have you got your units of measurement a bit mixed up, as 0.056 thou = 0.0014224 mm? :?

I've known engines where you didn't need any gauges to check the endplay, as you could feel the crankshaft moving if it was pulled to and fro, yet they ran fine for many years.

There's no easy way of correcting this fault, as I suspect it's caused by the gear wheel on the crankshaft not being pressed on far enough...

Hi Ken,maybe my figures are written down wrong but I know what I mean
The difference between the two measurements is 56 thou.(or was it 52)

Dave

one of my best used engines had a noticable ammount of fore and aft movement , you could hold the fan and actually clonk it back and forward! did another 3 years like that before the body went and the engine went "under the bench"

as long as you dont have any deep in the bowels knock or any top end clatter on over run then just dont worry about it.

@Viking
what are you stripping that re-con engine for?

Some folks (UK and French) told me that recondition engines done by well known french mob, was shit. So I bought one, stripped it to investigate and yes the reconditioning is very low. But what do you get for 1 kilo, not much. The price matches the engine. I'm sure the engine will run past 100.000 clicks and beyond. This engine have a very good cam and new barrels etc. (Argentina) Heads are poorly made (using old valves). Oil pump old with bad marks etc.

Saw the pics in daves thread about oil seals
thought " thats a lot of goo sticking out the joints of a very clean engine"

had a car where the engine was nearly totalled after the silicone ooze had broken off and choked the oil pickup.

but then i got the car cheap after it developed oil pressure issues

Isn't that a DeGraaf sticker on the engine, guess he's sourcing some of his stuff from France now.
Or did that one come out the back door of the atelier?
