I have cleaned all the jets and put new gaskets on the Beige Beasts carb but still get major problems with it blowing fuel out, stuttering pick up on a light throttle and more annoyingly very little pick up on the second choke..it is driving me mad - Help Please!

If it is leaking fuel I'd be inclined to check the float isn't holed and the the needle valve is seating properly.

Has it always had this set of faults, or are they a recent development?
Reason for asking as they might suggest carb icing...

Failing that, I'd suggest increasing the primary petrol jet to a 125, if it's a 120 that's on your 21-24 carb at present.

Hi Ken

I will check the jetting but to answer your first comment, it has always been dog rough - I have used loads of carb cleaner and various other things to clean up all the air ways and jets but nothing seems to massively improve the situation...the one thing I'm not clued up on is that this carb has an air jet control screw on the rear side of the carb and I cant find any information about properly setting the carb up - thoughts?

That's odd,
if your Dyane is 1978/79 vintage, that carburettor with an 'air volume' screw facing towards the bulkhead will not have been on it when it left the factory, but taken from a car at least 5 years older. :?

Have you got any pictures of the carb, preferably taken from the nearside, showing the throttle linkage if possible?

Hi Ken

No Pics as too dark when I read your post - The Beige Beast is '76 vintage and has an organ pedal + rods to activate the throttle

You can see the carb on download/file.php?id=2486&mode=view and can see the aformentioned air volume screw in the top left

Sorry for underestimating the Beige Beast's vintage, as it's a 1975 build, going by the engine plate...

Those carbs usually have a small screw plus lock nut for the basic 'tickover' setting, which can then be fine tuned using the air volume screw.
Iirc, you want the air volume screw to be 'about' one turn out from fully home, then adjust the throttle stop screw.
After altering the air volume screw, the idle mixture screw on the front of the carb usually needs a tweak as well.

Depending on the mileage the engine has covered, the secondary throttle stop screw may need adjusting.
That's the one visible in your picture, pointing upwards, with the stop touching the head of the bolt.
1/2 turn inwards on that usually helps, or at least does no harm.

Is the primary petrol jet a 'grub screw' type, or similar to the secondary petrol jet?
Most probably the former, in which case you need to remove it to check what size it is.
If it's a 120, I'd advise going 2 steps up, to a 125...

ken.
