In my book you can repair a box for 250 but that's another matter. okay - so maybe i have opened a tin of worms and shouldn't have used names and prices - the box was very noisy, grindy and kept jumping out of 3rd on compression - 2 years later and it is smooth and stays in gear......i know he replaced the front and rear bearings and the 2nd syncro...plus, collected it and delivered it - it's been perfect and quiet since.... |

Sean wrote: ding ding"seconds out" think we should define whats "repaired" and what is "Rebuilt" in Vikings world Sorry guys, I know it is fly-f#king Repaired is stripping a gear box partly or completely, replacing faulty parts only and putting the gear box back together without looking at back-lash, pinion deepth etc. Rebuilt is a complete stripping, replacing all bearing, setting the pinion and back-lash etc etc. This takes 2 days on the bench to do properly. |

having spent many hours at the back of a pit lane with Rick doing boxes and me drinking coffee( im sure he can actually do them in his sleep) its prettymuch what he does, he replaces the main bearings but sometimes leaves perfectly sevicable ones alone. most of his rebuilds certainly involve ajusting the pinion shims and setting the preload and lash on the final drive |

Do not doubt any of it for a second. My point is, stripping the lower pinion replacing the front bearing, getting the end-float spot on is time consuming. Getting the correct pinion deepth etc etc takes time. What about stripping the crown wheel rebuilding it correctly? It takes ages. Doing all this is for me a proper rebuilt (recondition) anything else is merely a repair job. Yes pulling a gear box down to minimum, replacing a few bearings (not interupting the original set up) and putting it back together again is fairly quick but not a rebuilt. |

Always considered Rick to be an absolute guru on 2CV gearboxes. He is also a very nice guy. |
