I will be spraying my car soon(well the garage will) and was wondering about the type of paint to use?
Base coat and laquer,cellulose or plain two pack. I have no idea which to choose and why .Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Dave, if a garage is doing this for you 'professionally', then 2-pack all the way.

No question. Much better finish, more durable, better coverage, better everything. The reason we don't DIY it is because it's deadly...

Mmm. Debatable. Put a two-pack painted car next to a well-loved-and-polished original, and the difference is huge. Two-pack tends to look a bit "plastic".

Depends what you want.

Durability on the cheap- Enamel.

Originality, which needs looking after - Cellulose.

Basic color which is shiny and durable - 2- pack

Metallic or pearl finish - Base and clear.

My own personal opinion is don't even think of enamel unless it's a land rover.

Cellulose is great for DIY but chips and marks easily.

2-pack I'd have if I were paying a garage to do it.

Base and clear is mostly used for high gloss and metallics, neither of which suit a 2cv.

Without referring back to your "Blue Bamboo" thread, which paint did you go for on your project, O-N?

Cellulose mate. It's the only one (except enamel) that can be sprayed DIY without costly breathing equipment. Enamel takes ages to dry and is a non starter really.

Like I said if it was me, and I was paying a garage for the work then I'd go for 2 pack. It comes in solid colours so you can get an original look, it's just a bit shiny compared to Cellulose. A much better paint in all other respects though, and restored cars do tend to look shiny anyway.

tm2cvs, you have a point. I think, on balance, it's still the best option, and the one I'd go for if having it done professionally.

The clue in 2cv's comment is in the 'well loved and original' bit, which a car due for a respray clearly isn't. You can't really replicate well loved and original, especially as it often translates into 'not used very often'.

Modern paints beat the old stuff hands down, it's just a shame they're not DIY friendly... yet.

Not so Old Nail, after visiting Citroens Conservatoire a few years back, and seeing all the 2cvs they have there which have had no use at all and always been indoors still don't look as shiny and have that 'plastic' appearance that 2 pack painted cars have got. The paint they had when new was cheap and cheerful, and even an average respray has more effort and care put into the finish than Citroen gave.
