So having read Russ' excellent 'all about' thread and read various comments others have made I think there may be something wrong with my suspension.

My spring cans don't seem to rotate.

I went down and, admittedly, didn't try very hard but apart from a few groans there was no movement. Igripped, I twisted, but nothing happened...

I also noticed that at the front end of the can, where it meets the doughnut, there's a thin metal disk, barely half a mm thick hanging down. what is this? I'm guessing its broken? should I be worried?

I have all day today, if i can locate 2 45mm spanners shall I whack the whole lot off?

Metal disc? Sounds like the metal backing has come away from the rubber buffer?

(Shamelessly stealing one of Russ' photos):

I hope not :? When it dries up a bit I''ll put her on stands and have a proper look. I want to adjust the front tie rods anyway and also secure the rubber gaiters on the can with a cable tie as theyve come adrift

sam,
that's one of the thin covers, whose primary purpose seems to be holding thick felt washers in place on the end plates of the canisters.
They do have a tendency to rust, especially the ones which face forwards...

( p.s. A 46mm spanner works better for the canisters.)

Ok, so left hand can rotates. right side wriggles but definitely no rotation...

Both wheels in the air? Is there still any load on the tie-rods and knife-edges, or are they wiggleable?

The AK had been adjusted upwards so much that there was still considerably load on the rear springs even with the chassis on trestles and the suspension hard against the bump-stops.

never been worried about it. If they don't rotate its not going to be a major issue [until you come to re chassis it]
