Post subject:  changing the loom over

mr rythm thief kindly sent me new loom after i cack handidly blew my last one up, and i havent really had time to fit it yet, but next week is looking hopeful,

is there any advice on changing it? like start one end work your way back, i think i remeber ken suggesting when trying everything out (apart from starter) put a 30amp fuse between positive termal and battery clamp incase i messed something up?
is it fairly easy, if i plug things in as i un plug them?

and atr the back of the dash is tons of green wires, just to clarify, there all earths (green ones)

also im going to fit relays so i can use hal bulbs, shall i do this before fitting the loom or after?
thanks :)

Gawd, no...

Citroen don't colour the wire, like some kind manufacturers do. They just put teeny-weeny tabs on the ends of green wires...

LABEL everything, remove the old loom with plenty of photos, then compare the two out of the car and add labels the new one without removing them from the old one.

good idea, i shall do that,
you would of thought with any sense that youd have something like red as a live then a tab saying what it does

incidently are these tabs well marked or random? (saying pos or neg) or just saying "lights" or something

also the loom ive got being non dip dim, its a straight swap over, nothing different apart from lack of the relays for dim dip?

They are just colours. Brown end, green end, white end, blue end, purple end ( :? ) red end etc...

that's why you have to label them.

ok thanks, thats wht i wanted to know :)

i can tell this is going to be a nightmare of a job, but its neccasary, i geuss the colour codingness is sort of useful if you label everthing (assumeing that for example, the headlight switch, 4 wires, 4 different colour tabs? remebering which one goes wehre tho!!

Disconnect the battery. Use electrical tape and permanent pen or masking tape and pen (if it's not going to be rained on) or to save the risk of the tape coming off I used a perm marker pen to write letters or numbers on each "plastic end" keeping a key on paper of which each was and writing the letter on each corresponding terminal. Systematically remove, label; remove, label etc.

Behind the dash you'll prob find pairs or groups taped together.. if not, do that before you disconnect, eg the three wires going to the wiper switch (blue, white, black?) tape them in their group (but label each wire just in case).

Take your time, try and match up the looms but a multimeter/continuity tester can come in handy for finding wires end-to-end .

Draw pictures. I got me crayons out and did a pretty picture of the connections behind the dash when I had to change my loom.

Depending on age you might find extra wires/wire missing, don't panic: do what you can do then come back here and ask.

If you label the ends, write it all down (or draw or take pics) and go slowly and logically it won'tbe a nightmare at all.

Remember to replace the rubber grommets where wires pass through the bulkhead/any metal.

Its also a good time to clean up your connections. I had massive troubles disconnecting the bullets at the headlamp bar, they had corroded together so soaked them in a penetrating oil while I drew my dashboard picture! :geek:

ive got one where it goes through the bulkhead, im going to have my iphone and im goign to take a pic of everything, sticky labels and all, so hopefully all will go well,

and also have my netbook to look at photos!

it sounds difficuly, but its probably one of those jobs if approached with confidence, and openmindness and taking my time, it will be achievable, with little or no swearing,

swearing at objects is something i need to stop doing

louise must of missed one of yoru posts, but thats all brilliant advice, thanks :)

im going to photo every connection, and then pring it out on the pc, and number it like that, so there will be no reason to mess it up, i think thats the easiest way about it,
does the loom go to the back or is it from the dash to the headlamps?

if i may say so it doesnt seem to difficult if i keep my head screwed on!
