| Post subject: | Fixing an unwound gearbox. |
Can it be done in situ? I'm confused as I've read different accounts, some say yes, others say the engine and gearbox need to be moved forward a little to remove the selectors. |

Maybe try ringing one of specialist and ask for a brief run down of whats involved... |

I read and printed out the above, but he has the selectors removed in that article which made me wonder. I then did a search on here but I must be crap at searches 'cause nothing came up. I'll just go out and have a go at it I think...I mean...knowing me...what can possibly go wrong?

Just been on a rescue mission in Vannes. Young fellow in trouble, drove home in 3rd gear, damaged the 2nd/3rd sliding pinion. Had to remove selector rods to replace the sliding pinion, engine and gear box forward. If no damage, simply screw the selector ring back on and lock it. Only need to remove the lid and set the gears to neutral first, no worries. |

Brilliant Viking thank you. I don't think there will be any damage as I didn't drive it, only reversed it down the driveway. I just hope I don't lose that spring or ball down inside the box - which is a favourite for happening to me. |

Doing it in the car is possible, and has been done, my old man got his stuck between reverse and first, managed to remove the lid and screw them back on, he had never done it before, and I wasn't there to see how, all I know was he used two screwdrivers... but it is do-able, I think you have to be fairly patient though. |

Well, even if it can't be done in-situ, we'll at least end up a fantastic series of photos and a 5-page dissertation on the attempt... (snigger) |
