Post Track rod removal
Any tips on removing the track rods from the steering rack?
I dont have a puller and am afraid to force them off.
Any advice will be much appreciated.

Undo the nut, but leave it on a few threads (to protect the thread on the stud. Put a lever behind the rod and apply pressure then give the nut a good shock inwards with a hammer. It might work, it might be on waaaay too tight still. It's worked for me.

is it a ball joint?
i replaced a steering rack on a truck with a friend (it snapped while he was doing 40 down the road!) and we got a teng tool ball joint remover and a draper ball joint remover, we stripped the thread on the teng one (so he took it back!!) and the draper one was like a tuning fork but pitched, i think it was about 13 pounds, and the harder you hit it the more likely it is to pop

hope thats some use!

shock method
if the rack is off the car hold a big lump hammer under the eye and smack the top with another hammer

if you get it right the force travels through the eye to the battom hammer which flys off ...bit like newtons balls swinging desktop toy
the eye pops off the taper

ive found that the fork splitter can damage the cover and slide rack side.

heat also works oxy set and heat the eye and off it pops, dont think that a cheapo taymar type blowlamp willl get enough heat in quick enough tho.

No damage here if rubber is removed first

Thanks Viking,I was afraid to belt the bolt head because I was not sure what was inside the rack.Is that just a ordinary ball joint splitter or did you make it just for this job?

I used a ball joint splitter to remove arms. But had to ground dowm splitter plate to fit behind arms to get it to work correctly.
