wellllll basically, i replaced my wiper motor a couple of months back because it has happened already. what i suspect is that because the offside wiper spindle is so worn, the wiper gets stuck on the window rubber over heating the motor. this one hasnt puffed out smoke yet but is still very warm so im guessing it has blown as the switch dosnt do anything to it!
i dont want to put another one on if its going to blow again. so a whole wiper assembly is probably the easiest fix?

Thanks for the offer bertie, but i think i saved the motor! turns out the where the splindle goes on the metal frame which holds the linkage got bent, which froze up the whole linkage, luckily i was only round the corner so i turned the car off before the motor fried.
had a few minutes with some pliers and ive bent the metal back and its working now. but i will still need some spindles eventually. i just dont know when!
