 GS/A Gearboxes
Not strictly A-series, but a couple of questions. 1, What external clues are there between the different ratio 'boxes? The rear casing on a 5-speed is an easy one, but what about the difference between a short 5-sp and a long 5-sp? Are there any external clues, or is counting shaft rotations the only way, what about the cars they came from, is it possible to predict what ratios would be found in a particular car? I've read Cats recognition guide, what do 453 & 456 mean in reference to 5-sp 'boxes? 2, Does any have a manual for the GS/A? Does it include any good gearbox diagrams, is the final drive pinion an integral part of the output shaft? How hard does it look to swap the final drive ratio from one box to another, would it involve disassembling the whole gear cluster. 3, How many parts in a gearbox need expert skill to be assembled properly, is it just the pinion/crownwheel clearance, or are there other areas. Thankyou

(apart from LN/A and Ami external diffs - bellhousing etc) Quote: 2, Does any have a manual for the GS/A? IIRC the diff section is similar to 2cv. Quote: 3, How many parts in a gearbox need expert skill to be assembled properly, is it just the pinion/crownwheel clearance, or are there other areas. I think it's mainly backlash on the crownwheel, but Rick Pembro would be the man to speak to.

 Re: GS/A Gearboxes
Joolz, had a quick look at a GS manual and one major difference between the setting up of the crownwheel and pinion on these gearboxes compared to an A series 'box is that a special cap is needed when setting the conic distance. On A series gearboxes, the measurement is made directly onto the end of the pinion shaft, which makes life much easier. I suppose that it would be possible to set up a GS pair from tooth contact patterns, but don't intend to find out any time soon... ken

 Re: GS/A Gearboxes
Hmm, thanks Ken, that sounds bad. Outside the scope of amateur tinkering I suspect.
