Post subject:  Water creeping around the windscreen rubber

Hello All

The windscreen surround on my Ami is actually pretty clean but there is water getting down into the rubber (where the glass sits) and out the other side into the car....so drip drip on a really wet day. Even after a week of sun, the water is still sitting there as it's got no-where to evaporate

Can I use lolly-sticks to get in there and dry it as much as possible then - ????????? put a small bead of mastic in there from the outside???? a bit of Hylomar to seal it????

any advice, gratefully recieved

total removal of screen and re-bedding not an option at the moment....it's not that bad but want to do it whilst it's a least sunny

cheers
Will

3M do a special non setting sealer for rubber gasket windscreens, part number 08509 you apply it with a caulking gun. It's about 7 quid a tube from your local paint factor. I find the 3M one significantly better than the generic alternatives. You can clean the mess of the bodywork with WD40 or Duck Oil.

I had the exact same problem on the Saab after having a new screen put in - cured it by putting a truckload of black mastic between glass & seal, but it does mean that when I have another new screen put in (I've never had such a stone-chip-magnet!) I'll need to replace the rubber, too.

That might be a trickier issue on an Ami 6...

If t'were me, next time I spotted an Autoglass or similar blokey, I'd wander over and have a chat with him. You may find he'll be happy to take the glass out and refit it properly for a drink.

Cheers Adrian

I heard something the other day that surprised me

APPARENTLY (so don't take as 100% gospel) Pilkingtons can produce ANY windscreen for ANY car.....a friend of a friend got a DS windscreen made for £140

that is amazing if it's the case

Yep, if they don't have the patterns, they'll make 'em.

They had the patterns... If they didn't, it'd be a LOT more than that...

I gather a new windscreen for some of the current superminis & people carriers with the "panoramic" glass that curves into the roof can be a couple of thousand pounds - and are sometimes specifically excluded from insurance windscreen cover...

i have the same problem on my D*lly

on the 50s 2cv's they knew this was a problem so designed it so that the water that leaked through the seal then drained off through a pipe out the side of the car,

thats what matt told me,

and ive been wanting to replicate this idea for ages

anyway my car does the drip drip thing too, infact if you peal away the rubber you can see just how badly its rusted because of the water sitting there,

oh well the rust is there and you can get the replacement windscreen surround, althuogh its expensive, theres not much i can personally do about it anyway :(

The 3M stuff won't write the seal off, it doesn't set so you just scrape it off the seal with an ice cream stick. It is messy however.

I have used fish tank sealant to fix leaky windscreen rubbers. It works and is cheap.
