Both handy but it is advisable to take some pre-cut fuel line with you to bypass them if needed.

Based on the advice of others, I fitted my fuel filter BEFORE the fuel pump to prevent any crud getting into the gasket.

Could fit filter next to valve on the chassis for a road car.
However filter body is glass when removing/replacing the wing it could get damaged.

Part Two
Fit bowl type filter near the tank, if a can locate a small version.

Yep, just like the plastic versions - which are also see-through - but more fragile and a damn sight more expensive. But blingier.

If the one in your pump already is buggered, then changing the pump might be a better bet. It could well have got damaged by unfiltered grot from the tank, though, so unless you put a filter before the pump, the next pump (or one-way valve...) may well go the same way.

Isn't there a filter on the outlet of the tank on the 4x4s, inside the chassis?

Why a non return? A mechanical pump can't function without its own internal non return valve.
