I have another wiring problem courtesy of a previous bodger. :(

As you may be able to make out from the photo above, a previous owner has fiddled with the wiring harness by splicing a wire into the green (is that main beam?) wire near the fuse box, you can just make out where by the position of the black tape. The black wire that was taken off the green then runs down the outside of the harness until it splits into two via a blue connection down near the headlamp bar.

Image

You can see on the two red connector ends that I made a tag which reads 'Red to green'. What that means is that the original green wires from the lamp bar that connect together with the green wires from the harness were connected to these, while the green ones from the harness were left dangling as can be seen from the photo below taken when dismantling.

Image

Obviously with the car currently sat in blazing sunshine It's hard to check if the main beam is working properly or not so I'll check that later. What I can't understand is why do this?

The second problem is that while the nearside indicators have a feed from the main harness that is now working (hooray) the original feed for the offside wasn't used, this too I found simply taped to the headlamp bar as the tag I fitted tells me. The thing is, there isn't another live feed so I can't imagine how my flashers were wired up previously?

Image

I've tested this wire for current in the wire shown and it's not live, but where on earth could I draw current to supply the offside indicators from if not here?

That looks awfully like the indicator wire there in the last pic it must be a feed as its a female connector

as for the bodgery looks like someone has been bypassing something in the circut

really armed with one of the good wiring diagrams ( colour it in its much easier to read than looking at the little j or Bl nomelacture) it should be easy to put it back to how it was... or better

Yes that's the old indicator wire in the last picture, but it's dead. It was just taped to the headlamp bar unused. What I can't figure out is where they ran the power to the offside indicator from if they didn't use that? (and they didn't as it's not live) I think that's been bypassed too.

Oh yes I've got one of those, the page that looks like this you mean? :P Like so many things the Haynes manual talks as though it's all so simple, but when faced with the actuality the bloody things bewildering. Not to worry I'll sort it somehow.

Hi Mr Nail ......I've just looked on my '88 spesh.
The green wire is the dipped beam.
The white female connector is the indicator.
I've no idea what the black wire is ......but I'd suspect that perhaps its a bodge by a previous owner to overcome the problem you're now faced with.

NW Louis. I've looked at the Haynes on this and I'm supposed to be looking for a yellow wire! The grey wire shown in the photo's is the indicator wire from the harness Terry, or it was, because it's been bypassed somewhere, it's not live now. The black wire just bypasses the green headlamp wire in the harness for some reason, maybe there was a break in it?

It's not a big problem, it's just one of those last minute niggling things preventing my getting the MOT done so it's more annoying than anything else. The new side repeater I ordered hasn't showed up yet anyway, so I'll put it all back together when it does and scratch my head from there.
