Post subject:  Spluttering on start up

I've posted about this before somwhere but I can't find it... Anyway over the past few weeks my dad has been using the car as his daily and now even though the other is fixed, hes become addicted .... back on subject, on cold mornings you will start the car (usually just with foot to floor and then abit of choke for a few mins) and there is a spluttery hissy noise occasionaly when you are just slighty revving the engine. The car will then stall. It dosen't always happen but it has become much more common with daily use.... If you catch it in time and put the throttle down it won't stall... The hissy noise is deffo coming from the carb, probably undernealth it. I'm guessing it is therefore a carb problem and nothing more serious? Any ideas on what it is?

thanks
J

Once it warms up, does it run ok? Or is it a bit reluctant to idle, with the revs falling away rapidly - almost dying - as soon as you drop go below a certain fastish idle?

If the latter, then this would suggest an inlet manifold leak. I'd check the carb mounting bolts for tightness, tho' it's probably worth removing it and checking the state of the gaskets below (if fitted!). It's usually pretty obvious if there's a leak 'gap' as the colour/cleanliness of the surfaces will be different. It is ASTONISHING how even a tiny leak can affect the behaviour.

Reassemble using a smear of liquid gasket on all surfaces.
