An eggy smell is usually attributed to a duff battery. Depends on your opinion of the smell really, could be a clutch/brake burning smell, but I'd have though a battery would be most like an egg smell.

Seconded.

If it's got the small special dash, there's no indication of charge - but if it's got the bigger Charleston/Club dash, I'd expect the voltmeter to be somewhere way north of normal.

Either way, a quick check with a multimeter across the battery terminals - it should be ~14v, but to get THAT eggy I'm guessing on ~16v+.

If that's so, then the voltage regulator's having a sulk. It might be as easy as the earth terminal (I forget which one that is) has come loose. It might be that the VR itself has died. Either way, the result is that it's boiling the battery dry...

not so much as a duff battery but one that is rapidly being "duffed" by the overchrging voltage reg
new reg as soon as poss cause an over charging reg will ruin the coil, indicator clickythingy etc.....the battery is a door stop now...probably

Our Mehari used to give off a strong amonia kind of smell when you turned the cabin heater on... turned out Mice had nested in the heat exchanger over the winter and the smell was their... presents... burning off

There seems to be a mouse in the garage with the 400. Fortunately, it's appetite seems to be restricted to gaffer tape...

Adrian,
best be careful!

Had a call a few weeks ago from a chap near here, whose 2CV I'd last seen a decade ago.
He's been working in Hong Kong until recently, so the car hadn't seen the light of day for all of the time he'd been abroad.

The mice hadn't settled for eating the obvious bits such as heater tubes, but they'd also nibbled on lots of rubber bits under the bonnet.
However, the biggest surprise on their menu was the plastic washer bottle, since the cap had disappeared completely, plus about another 30mm of the top of the bottle...

I've got to go back and recommission the 2CV's engine soon, so might suggest having a look under the bonnet of the Slough-built Traction which has been sharing the garage with these gourmet mice.

( Careful with those grocers' apostrophes as well, now that I'm getting really old and grumpy.) ;)
