Post Grease
After playing about with suspension and bits and bobs I decided to grease the king pin again. Now I know why I had so much grease on the inside of my wheel... what I had squeezed in had mainly come out again as the bottom plug was missing. (now replaced with a spare)

however, now I have replaced the plug and can actually get some real pressure on the grease into the pin the tiny leaky bits from the top cap appear to be copper grease!

If someone has put copper grease in my kingpins instead of moly grease what problems am I likely to get if any?

I don't think many people have copper-grease in a grease-gun, so maybe it's not that, but regular grease just really old and contaminated with rust and dirt?

maybe... especially as the bottom plug was missing, certainly had the same look (glisten) as copper grease.

Tim,
as Eirik says, most probably rust, mixed with the new grease?
That tends to appear when greasing a set of kingpins which have been neglected and since grease hasn't been able to get to the top bush on your car for a while...

( Btw, on your track adjuster, you've got the slots in the clamps and sleeve in alignment, which is wrong (despite what you may read in Haynes or other 'how to' publications).
I prefer to set them 180 degrees apart... )

never touched them, honest! Why is it a problem having them aligned?

Post Re: Grease
Tim,
I'd guess it's because the clamp will be weaker with all the slots aligned.
On the ECAS/Dalton racer, I seem to recall Richard using 3 clamps, all with their slots at 180 degrees separation to the slot in the sleeve

Citroen's workshop manual advises that the slot in the sleeve can be 'anywhere except in alignment with the slots in the clamps', but once Haynes lost something in translation, other manuals which have cribbed off Haynes have made the same mistake.

The most recent publication even makes a big deal over warning that the slots must be alignment.

ken.
