1. An unwound gearbox isn't totally fubared, it's just temporarily indisposed.
A selector ring which should have been pinned securely onto its thread has worked loose and wound itself off the thread.
2. It can be done without removing the gearbox from the car.
Depending on how things go, it can sometimes be fixed in not much over an hour, although some practice on previous rewinds is needed for that sort of turnaround.
3. Citroen's invoicing time to swap gearbox internals into another case is about 14 hours.
It took me about 2 days to do a full rebuild recently, including changing all the bearings apart from those on the pinion shaft.
4. For an unwound box, see above.
As regards a functioning gearbox, it will depend on which parts may be nearing the end of their useful life.
It's also worth noting that some specialist tools are needed for this work, though...

Sorry if these q's sound a bit basic to any battle-hardened technical maestros out there. I'm good on the body/rust stuff, but a bit of a novice when it comes to hardcore tech stuff. Looking to learn though!
) but dont do as i did strip 2 boxes put all the bolts selectors etc in a box carefully place all the shims with the proper bits in the respective boxes and then throw the box of bits out in a fit of uncharacteristic tidyness.
