Any ideas on why the beige beast wont charge? I have checked the alternator and the brushes are fine - so they should be with only 10K on the clock - and putting a volt meter across the terminals its supplying a current - but the battery doesn't seem to get any charge from it. All the wiring is totally original and untouched. Could it be the regulator? As it has sat for 30+ years outside, rust has formed a hole above the regulator and I suspect has been getting water on it and the contacts for a good 10 years. Comments please..... |

What voltage are you getting from the big terminal on the back of the alternator? then what are you getting at the + on the battery? What does the lucar wire feeding the alternator give you? More than likley the voltage reg, but check battery terminals are tight and greased and the starter terminals are tight and clean as the feed from the Alt stops off at the back of the starter on its way to the battery + Sean |

Right then - Voltage readings as follows: Battery 13 volts Alternator Large connector 14 volts Lucar connector off alternator 2 volts Comments? |

looks like the alt doing its job but losing something on the way to the battery, unless the battery 13v was with engine switched off. could just be a duff battery thats not holding its charge Sean |

Nah 13v is with the engine running and its a brand new battery - regulator then? |

Dont seem to get any change in voltage when the revs rise or fall |

ssd, is it possible for you to get a reading at the lucar connector, _without_ disconnecting the socket from the blade? At stall and at idle, there should be 12 volts there, which will decrease as the revs rise if the regulator is working correctly. From memory, I think I've seen it drop to around 4 or 5 volts, but never as low as 2 volts... ken. scoobastevesdad wrote: Right then - Voltage readings as follows: Battery 13 volts Alternator Large connector 14 volts Lucar connector off alternator 2 volts Comments? |
