Not sure if this has been covered before but want some thoughts....... Im having a problem with fuel evaporating when the car has been sitting for a few weeks - well at least thats what I think is happening. Or it could be fuel draining back from the carb to the tank??? It all started when I tried to start car a few months ago - she just turned over - but didnt fire. So at the time I changed plugs, coil, leads etc etc and it was still the same. Then after speaking to Louis B and Pete Sparrow both said that fuel has probably evaporated. After a quick suck (not pleasant) on the fuel pipe - I reattached it to the carb and after a couple of turns she started!! Has anyone done anything to cure or stop the above from happening in the first place. I'm told its all down to modern fuels ............ Thanks Rich |

Hi rich my 4x4 doing the exact same about a week ago i was cranking and cranking it for about 30 mins the battery was almost flat and it just wasnt starting at all so i tried wiht the dampstart it started straight away for about 3 seconds. i was just confused but knew it was fuel. the following day decided to take the fuel pipe off to the carb sucked it so i could hear it coming through the pump and cranked it the fuel came straight out put it on and its started straight away! i left it for 3 weeks. What is it? |

Remove the fuel line to the carbi, turn the ignition key and look for fuel. No fuel, pump no good or false air along the line incl pick up (tank sender). Dry pumps are no good either. Put some oil in to the hose running to the pump. Wait for the oil to reach the pump, turn the key. Or get some ''start you bastard'' and spray in to the air filter. Voila |

Put a boat pump in the system rich, talk to louis barbour he will know what Im talking about (Ill take a picture when I find what im talking about its like a hand pump thing). Why not teach alex to start it and get him to do it each weekend for a couple of quid then it wont be a problem. |

Thanks Rich Cant be that. the fuel sits in the bowl and when there isn't attached directly to the fuel hose so cant back syphon. there should be enough in the bowl to fire the engine before the fuel pump starts to work again and replenishes the float bowl if there is crappyness in the fuel system it can stop the valves in the fuel pump wiorking properly, gentle blow thru with air line or open the pump up if its one of those and clean the crystalised crud out with a soft brush and clean petrol. Also check that the fuel line hasnt gone porous as that would let the fuel lines drain and need re priming by the pump on start up check float levels too. maybe it just needs a service? |
