Post subject:  Coil and hot starting

Hi all

I have trouble starting the old stick when it is hot. I have read that this is most likely the coil. Would it be prudent just to get one and see, or am I just throwing money away? Is there a preferred supplier for the same?

Thanks.

Justin

For a test you can switch the two thin wires on the coil if it wont start when hot..
When you do that, touch the coil to feel if it's hot...

If the car starts better after you change the wires you can buy a new coil ;)

If you buy one, go for a Valeo one.. There is a lot of other brand coils wich are new, but as bad as an old one.. :(

Thanks for that. I wondered if this would be any good:

Maybe a bit over the top.

The coil in your link is great, I have one, wish I had three!

I see no technical reason for a diferent way of sparking or heating dissipation by inter-changing the primary cables.

But a lean mixture may cause an abnormal coil heating. The voltage required to create a plasma is much higher than when the mixture keeps a good stechiometric relationship.

IIRC swapping the cable changes the polarity and negates any wear at the plugs, a duff coil will fail to work whichever way round its connected...wont it?

poor hot start can also be tappets needing done

coils dammaged by incorrect dwell, over charging voltage reg and leaving the ignition on without the car running.

valeo, i was told that the machinery was sent to Argentina and so the SA coils have better windings, however the cases leave a lot to be desired.

Coils now'days are shit, hence the yellow coil from Ecas. We have been spoiled by good quality Ducellier and Femsa but those days are long gone. Today coils are substandard and do not last long. So always carry a spare in the boot. They are afterall very cheap.

I carry my old one in the boot, which when the Mehari one overheated I used to get her going - it still had a bit of life in it.

Just remember to mark them 'new' and 'old' !!

I totally agree with you, Tom. By reversing the polarity the electric field inside the plug gaps we can force the spark in case of weared plug. But I was just talking about the coil heating.

And as

I think the first thing would be replacing the spark plugs.

I use to exchange my coil primary polarity every, say, 2000 or 3000 kms even I have the 123ignition installed among with the VISA coil (0,9 ohm primary)

Best regards.
