 Re: Tappy problem...
Adding my five pennys - BB had its valves adjusted when it was in Richard Daltons as they will have been original spec from 30+ years ago - it was very quiet but they recommended increasing them - so they did the work and of late its started pinking and generally doesnt seem to be running well. I re-checked points gap, ignition setting and finally tappets and they were a sloppy 0.35 on the exhaust side - I tightened them back to a good 0.25 and the difference was immediate - no pinking and much better pickup and power - so the moral is if you do run slappy tappets, dont go over 0.30 on the exhaust valves....

 Re: Tappy problem...
blimey, .35 does sound quite a gap compared to .25, i've got the rocker covers off now... yet strangely enough... i still have tapping, i tried loosening them a little, untill oil started to drip, and the tapping didnt change! and i've checked both rockercovers and there are no signs of scoring or marks from them bein too tight!

 Re: Tappy problem...
Joe - are your pushrods sitting properly? Give them a good wiggle when you have the heads off - could be they are slipping around a bit and giving a false closing figure when hand cranked but loose when running.....

 Re: Tappy problem...
JOE.CHECK THE CYLENDER HEAD NUTS AND THE ROCKER SHAFT NUTS! dont make me come down there and beat it in to you and you should hear the tappets when its ticking over. make sure everything is at its proper torque and go try it out on the road AZU yep thats counter intuative, ther wider the gap the less period for the valves, not necessarily a bad thing to reduce part of the time one of the valves is open due to the quite large overlap in the 2cv cam. Reducing the period of the exhaust valve may increase the entrapment of the charge=more bang for your bucks, weve tried playing about with valve timing Viking, its not that you cant convince us in the "old wives" club that 0.20 is better because you insist its so( without actually trying alternatives), us old wives have tried 0.15, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 etc and have actually decided which suits us best. 602, an outbreak of consensus, whatever next! Sean
