Post Re: Sticking choke.
I've been briefly on the 2CVGB forum, didn't know it existed for ages, seemed to find this one much quicker and instantly felt at home. I may join up on there just to find out about any meets near me, wouldn't mind someone local casting an eye over the car.

I was only jokin' ;) , I haven't read about any issues along those lines on there, but in relation to other car forums I've ever used, this is just great at how quickly and friendly the advice seems to be. I don't feel a prat asking such daft questions (well, only a little bit).

Aye, he'll cast an eye over it for money but objects to folk asking for help on a forum.

Where exactly are you? I think the nearest meeting to you is "The John Noakes Fan Club". No, don't ask me why John Noakes, :? as far as I'm aware he had nothing to do with Citroen, let alone 2cvs.

Hooligan!
Isn't that why there was a ball of the stuff blocking the carb throat when you got to the National meeting?

Alkie,
that 12mm hex headed plug needs to come out anyway to gain access to the primary petrol jet and removing it drains most of the fuel in the carb bowls.

Both petrol jets are located at the bottom of the bowls, the secondary one is easiest to get at and can be lifted out by hand. ( Ordinary flat bladed screwdriver.)
The little 'grub screw' primary can be hooked out with a piece of plastic coated garden wire once it's been unscrewed. ;) ( A long, thin, flat bladed screwdriver for this one.)

A compressor + blow gun are the best way to clean out a carb, otherwise clean, lint-free cloth.
Kitchen paper or similar may leave enough fibres behind to block a jet...

One quick question, anyone know how best to drain the float chamber of fuel when working on the carb? As Ken suggested I can leave the carb on to get at the jet, but removing the plug at the rear will cause fuel spillage, do we just siphon it out or soak it up with a rag????

I've had both jets out and examined them, and took out the 12mm hex head to get to the primary jet, is it not a bad idea to remove this on the engine and let fuel spill down onto the crankcase? Or does it simply evaporate by time you come to start it up - I suppose the small volume of petrol spilt, compared to the volume of air around it, and the lack of instant blistering heat or a spark will not cause any problems...

Looking forward to see if it helps the mpg and stops it running rich.

Getting that ball bearing and spring back will be bloody fiddly, especially with cold hands. I'm off to ebay to buy a telescopic magnet thingy.

Cheers Jonathan, just found that ones up in Darlington, I'm between Skipton and Preston, being on the border I think I'm between a few meets actually, having done a bit of research.

Just a few pics from changing the jets the other day, apologies to all the members who know this stuff and think of it as very basic, but I was crying out for some images like this so just thought I'd post some in case it helps anyone else who is just as inexperienced!

Jet location on a Solex twin choke carb:

Changing the primary jet with the hex plug removed:

Where the ball bearing and spring go for the fast idle cam:

It rests against the cam as it is put back into position, if you're worried about it falling out, stick some tape over it while you work on the carb, then when done slide the cam over it and pull out the tape.
