Post Re: changing the loom over
Right. So ive studied the wiringdiagrams, i went into the garage this morning bedore work to inspect the loom, i have another loom which i bought ar l2b for a pound, and lookig at it, its all multi coloure mish mash, but its all numbered, so im going to see if the wires that are numbered tally up with the wiring diagram, the loom is pre dim dip, but ive no idea about its history, so im probably going to stick with mr rythm thief's loom, as i dont know much about the othwr one. (sensible choice?)

James! Just Do It! ;)

You matched up RT's old loom last night? Go for that! Have some faith in yourself! Theres a lot that becomes obvious as you go... the thicker blue and yellow wires at the starter, the three yellow wires with red/black/purple(don't quote me but you get my point) at the ignition contact drum. the grey wires with Blue black white for the wiper switch, in a nice little connector at the motor end...

Really you'll be fine! Just bite the bullet :)

I've just caught up with this topic, I haven't read all posts so this bit of advice may have been mentioned already, but...When removing the original loom, snip off each connection, but leave about an inch or so, complete with the coloured plastic tabs that Citroen kindly  used, as a prompt for when you fit the replacement loom. That is what I did when I fitted a new loom to my brother's '55 Morris Minor, and it was a doddle, with everything working first turn of the key.

i cant find enough wires to fill the gaps on that one, ive got 2 out of 3 on the silver thing, and none for the black, there aer 2 brown, 2 purple and one blue ended wires hanging about spare, but they dont tally up, shal i try them anyway?

James,
if it's any help, that black 'thing' is probably a diode from a dimlydipped car.

They're usually tie wrapped to the flasher can, so someone's grabbed the flasher can from a d-d car and fitted it to Rhythm Thief's now defunct Charleston with the diode still attached, 'cos they didn't have a clue what it was.

These things do happen, you know...

The silver thing is the indicator relay, by the sound of it. Can't help you with the wires which should go to it I'm afraid. I do know that there was no dim/dip resistor on my Charlie, and if there had been it'd have gone in the bin. :)
Regarding your earlier questions, yes there's only one wire which goes from the loom to the coil, the other terminal on the coil is attached to the spade connector on the side of the points box. The two yellow wires for the ignition ... one will be permanently "live" and the other will be live when you turn the key. I think. It doesn't matter if you wire these up the wrong way round, all that will happen is that the starter motor will turn even with the ignition off but it won't fire as there will be no current to the coil. If this happens, just swap the wires over. Oh, and I modified the ignition wiring as the ignition barrel was knackered (well, missing) and I wired in a flick switch and push button starter.
