Then won't he need an old type gear box?

Or rather a post '70 gearbox. Which I'd have thought would have lower gearing?

if thats the case, could i modify the box i have to accomidate this requirement?

Sam shut-up, he was almost satisfied by the last answer. He doesn't really want a traffi clutch, he just thinks he does. Quick show him something shiny before he goes off on one again.

Trust me James, you don't WANT a trafficlutch!

I no longer have one fitted to the Ami.

I f I was just going to potter around town all the time, I may have considered retaining it but I don't potter around making a pretty pointless "gimmick". I just want a clutch that allows me to select gears! There's nowt worse than the car sounding like it's about to stall, giving the throttle a blip and nearly flying into the car in front because you're in gear......

The flywheel matters; the early 3 finger clutch is fitted inside the flywheel. The diaphragm flywheel is to all intents and purposes flat. Therefore you MUST use the clutch appropriate to the flywheel.

There are 2 input shafts; short and long spline, 20mm and 40mm respectively.

A short spline input shaft will ONLY work with a 3 finger clutch. You cannot combine short spline with late diaphragm clutch.

The long spline will work with BOTH types of clutch.

both will work with either
light flywheel with short spline is less than ideal- but does work if your stuck and want to lob in a dyane box then take 5 yrs to sort out the 2cv box ;)

I just happen to have both a heavy flywheel and a lightened heavy flywheel going spare. They've both been promised to others for yonks now, but as they haven't bothered to contact me again to arrange collection they might be available.

Regarding the Trafficlutch, Spanners wise words regarding blipping the throttle whilst forgetting you're in gear are important, as is the special carb you need (additional dashpot to let engine revs drop slowly when the throttle is released, and IIRC the throttle is suited to earlier organ pedal accelerators which push to open the throttle rather than your pedal which pulls the throttle open). But also bear in mind that Trafficlutch equipped cars cannot be push/tow started.

Although Ecas now sell a diaphragm type clutch which will fit the heavy flywheel.

Well spotted. That's the way to go James. Heavy flywheel for smoother running plus diaphragm conversion clutch. Might even think about it myself. I have a spare engine with a 'heavy.'

I'm still far from convinced there is actually any point to fitting a heavy flywheel. Personally I far prefer the faster pickup of a light one when you plant your foot on the floor.
