Perhaps drilling a small hole in the 9:1 piston to let the extra compression out would equal it out?

Only lapping in the valves on one barrel works equally well as the relief hole, and it saves the bother of taking off the head to drill a hole in the piston crown.

alternativley for the high powered option.

add some ball bearings through the sparkplug hole to increase the compression on the 8.5 side ( should also help stop piston crown and plug from coking up)

Is there an optimal size for the bearings? I'm wondering whether to use a quantity of small ones or a few larger bearings?

I'm guessing they need to have a diameter of at least 8mm to prevent escape through the exhaust valve opening?

Will these do the job? I thought stainless would be better than chrome steel.

get 7.5 mm then you have spares when you take the lid off the gearbox

youll have to open the tappets to 1mm clearance so they don't escape till you need them

1mm? Surely you mean 1.05mm?

This is serious technical discussion, I don't think we should drag increased valve clearances into it and get sidetracked.

I am however going to take an angle grinder to the base circle of my camshaft to increase its lift. I think that setup may require 9.3mm ball bearings. I just need to figure out whether to use a 40 grit or 80 grit disk on the angle grinder.
