When you're doing road trips, going off route to look for a petrol station is a pita. I like to carry a 20l jerrycan in the boot so I can refuel wherever I stop. Plus I can buy 45l when I see it cheap.

I've been thinking about building a steal tank with a built in high pressure pump, but would like to add some extra capacity at the same time, I was thinking about putting something in the chassis. Is that where the Barbour cars have theirs? Anyone got pics?

I already have an auxilliary tank in the 4x4.

The main one is 12l so there is a second 7l tank in the chassis bringing it up to a whopping 19 litres.

Got the 5l spare but am considering getting more made for inside the chassis. Anyone know of good/cheap stainless tank welders?

After seeing a pic of an old french can that fits in the corner of the boot I came up with this:

I managed to get a matching pair of locking fuel caps and this is pretty much all you can normally see.

Image

The tank fits around the spare wheel pretty well and holds just over 12 litres.

Image

Rigged up a Facet low pressure electric fuel pump right up in the wheel arch to suck the fuel out of the extra tank when the fuel gauge is getting low...

...and pump it straight into the filler tube.

I just flick the switch up by the interior light.

(I can't take any credit for welding the tank by the way. I tried and failed to make one that was watertight so gave the measurements to a friend of a friend who is a somewhat better at such things.)

I know there would be all sort of safety concerns if I sat and thought about it but I used to always carry a jerry can full of petrol in the boot anyway. I can't see this is significantly worse.

is that just a standard fuel pump? cos if you go down to the scrap yard you can pick up an injector pump of a bmw something real cheap, they pump fuel v fast!

What an excellent idea. If only I had a boot floor that was not 5cm deep...

why only 5cm deep?

i think tanks both sides would be quite cool, with a pipe connecting them or something..

or either like the sarah tanks under the seat would be quite cool..
