If you get on with points, can set them up well, and don't find them to be the bane of your existence then you may as well stick with them.

If on the other hand you find that no matter what you try, which guide you follow and who you ask the sodding thing still won't start, buying a 123 is considerably cheaper than the long term consequences of getting sectioned over setting up your ignition timing.

Personally I'd rather try to do my own fillings with an arc welder whist juggling burning rabid chainsaws, than go back to points.

juggling chainsaws

sounds good to me

well i have no idea where the points even are :(

i dont mind spending the money on the 123, if its worth it,
and as i dont know anything about points (Well apart from sometimes if you dont get a spark, then a bit of wet and dry (but not wetting it) does the trick) but thats on outboard motors which is a different ball game i geuss

as to my non existent knowledge do you think that 123 would be the best for me personally?

Nah,
I reckon our Will foresaw the fragility of electronic components when enclosed in a hot, sometimes oil-laden environment...

Let us go in together,
And still your fingers on your lips, I pray.
The timing is out of joint—O cursèd spite,
That ever I was born to set it right!
Nay, come, let's go together.

If I'm entirely honest I think if you can borrow a strobe, and use only new bits that you are dead certain cannot possibly be dead, and use several guides, you may as well try points. On paper the things really don't look complicated, yet somehow in practice I have never had any success in getting the things remotely close to working.

dont expect fuel economy with a new coil and 123 to improve drastically. it could be a number of things

My old spech. had a lumenition kit in it and she never let me down......I do like working on points however, and would suggest becoming familiar with them as it will always serve you well...

I would always keep a "get you home" set of points if I was doing any serious driving as it is one thing to by stuck fiddling with points on a traffic island at three in the morning with no torch and another thing to be confronted with a duff box of electrics that you can't work on...... :D

I has meant to point out that this is one of the most decisive subjects in 2cving, but I guess you're aware of that now? I guess you're going to have to make your own mind up James!

What you should really have done is started a thread asking not only what coil/ignition system to buy, but also which tyres are best and which chassis you should buy, that would have turned into the mother of all Internet difference-of-opinions!

(btw, points, Harley coil, 135 michelins and an original Citroën/slc chassis)
