Post Re: Front Drum Brakes
Pushing the pistons back into their cylinders shouldn't have any effect on the centralising procedure, other then to to give yourself some extra leeway when installing the shoes, as you've already commented.

I prefer to do as much as possible of the work on drum brakes with the g'box on the bench.
( But that's mostly to do with old age, gammy joints and so on... )

The brakes would have been assembled and centralised 'dry' at the factory, then once coupled up to the car's system, all that pressing the brake pedal does is move the pistons into contact with the shoes...

ken.

Blimey, Terry - you leave the oil in THAT long? ~3k here.

Nope ....Oil every 2500/3000 .....oil & filter every 5/6000.

Terry I find this a wonder.

Is the location of the magnet import?
Yeah ....it goes on the blue canister on the R/H side of your engine bay ....it should say "Purflux" on it ....unless you buy those cheapo white "Unipart" thingies ...

Do you catch any bits on the way in or the way out?
No ....only my knuckles on the way out

Any chance of a picture?
Nahhh .....it's dark under there

Have you cleared the hardrive of data before fixing it, it could fall off and get in the wrong hands!
I just left all my music on the hard drive .....now if you know of any way I can play it through my CD player,I would really appreciate a wiring diagram ...... [drawn on the back of a ten quid note and addressed to "Terry's Beer Fund,The Black Dog,Cambelsforth,York" or "Terry's Beer Fund,The Bay Horse,Scholes,Rotherham] ....

T. ..... ;)

You change the oil but not the filter? Why?

As is recommended I believe. My service intervals are exactly the same as Terry's.

They also widened the kingpin greasing interval to 6,000 miles, didn't they?

Changing the oil not the filter can only be for one reason - to cut apparent costs, without long-term viability being considered. There's really no other reason. Same as a lot of modern tin is at 30k mile oil change intervals now. An oil filter's hardly expensive or time consuming.

Habit [I guess] .....
The original service schedule on my 1975 Dyane was "Oil every 3000,oil & filter every 6000"
By 1988 the service recomendation [for my 2CV] was "Oil every 6000,oil & filter every 12000"
[both quotes taken from Citroens service guide/maintainance book thingy ......which was supplied with both vehicles, from new]
Now I do realise that the 1988 maxim of 6000/12000 miles is pushing things a bit far {IMO, Citroen were jumping on the bandwagon of "long service intervals" .....which at the time,BL,Ford etc were pushing} .... especially considering that the oil & filter capacity had not altered since 1975.
However .....the 3000/6000 .....especially considering that I usually do 2500/5000 between changes makes sense.....[to me]
Maybe its modern oils which are better [or so the oil companies would have us believe] .....although I still use Castrol GTX or Duckhams. [which I guess has remained the same since the 1970's.]

Now my wifes Direwoo Matitz :? .....First service at 12,000  .....and then every 12000 .....so how does that work then :?: :? ...... [and trust me,as much as I hate/dislike/detest that car,the engine seems bulletproof]

btw [totally "off-topic" again  ....sorry] .....Many years ago I renewed the kingpins on my Dyane .....the instructions with new 'pins [straight from "Uncle Roys"] read along the gist of ......
"The original 1948 service interval for greasing kingpins was 1000k [600 miles] ....nothing has changed since then"
I've always greased the kingpins on my 2CV at least every 1000 miles .....84000 and still on its original 'pins......
3000/6000 .....and later 6000/12000 :o ....no wonder about the number of "A" series cars failing MOT's on kingpins ..... :|

[edit] .....the two replies above have been posted while I was typing this .....I must learn to type faster  ....[although,in my defence,I must add that I typed this whilst munching my way through my brekkie toast&jam and washing it down with two cups of coffee] .... ;)
