Might sound silly, I've always found mine don't go in quite far enough, as the dipstick is slightly too long, I've cut 'about' 5mm off the bottom and it sits a treat in it's seat

Have a think about what that does to the markings on the dipstick...

They're now 5mm lower than they used to be, so you've got 5mm less oil in your engine than the dipstick says you have.

I have no idea why but I've never seen a 2cv dipstick where the plastic bit sits 'properly' in the top of the tube, it's just the way they are.

Louis, I think Luke was suggesting that oil wouldn't be leaking from the dipstick tube if the breather was maintaining proper vacuum in the crankcase. Could just be that the plastic has worn a bit loose, go with the wrapping some tape around it, or if you want to be posh see if you can find an O-ring that fits.

That rounded bit is all I've cut off, I thought it was a longer curve, mine fits fine in the seat and I checked the level before and after, exactly the same.

?
If the top of the dipstick is sitting lower in the tube, it follows that the bottom end has moved down as well.
I've got about 10 which have folk have cut down, mistakenly thinking that Citroen had made them incorrectly.

It doesn't do your engine much good running with less oil than it should have...

Ill take a picture of the old M4/early M28 ( 602 - no filter ?) The dipstick doesn't reach the floor, it doesn't even peek out the bottom of the tube.

I'm sure it's not coming from the top of the dip stick, otherwise the front of my engine would be oily. I've cleaned my engine so it's clean enough to eat your dinner off. Imagine my disappointment when the crank case on the near side was black with oil, cleaned again and revved the engine and saw a small ring of oil at the base of the dip stick, can I change the seal on the dip stick?

Ooops,
somebody has swapped them over, as there were 2 different lengths on M4 engines, to suit the different heights of tubes which were used.
About 45mm difference...

LL,
different problem, by the sound of that.

The tube should be an oil-tight press fit in the crankcase, seems as though yours has worked loose... :(

Is there anything I can do, would bodgeing it with gasket glue work, twat it with a hammer and a block of wood, or is my crank case ducked?
