Think simple first. Don't get sidelined into taking the engine to bits. If it ran OK last week then its going to be something simple.

True, but years back I had a car that ran perfectly one week, then didn't the next. It wasn't something simple. One of the conrods had made a bid for freedom and taken the dizzy with it.

arty,
there's a very simple test which you can carry out on a car which is reported to be reluctant to start in damp conditions...

Start it on a dry day, get it warmed up and ticking over nicely, then put one of these into action.

Spray a mist of water around the coil and along the plug leads until you find the point at which the engine begins to misfire or hesitate.

This can be on one or other of the plug leads, but sometimes it will be a faulty coil on which the HT spark has been tracking to 'earth' from one of the turrets to the light bar.

Too high resistance in the plug leads, or plug gaps which are too wide, will make matters worse.

Finally, if it's never necessary to use the choke to aid starting in cold weather, then the mixture is far too rich. ;)

try different choke settings, try it with none, then a bit, experement,

my car always starts, rain or shine, i use choke if i havent had it running that current day, it will start without it, and start fine, but it will run a bit lumpy without the choke, are the ht leads nice and flexible? mine are stiff as old boots, so replacements are going that way soon, as i remeber reading somewhere they should be flexible and if there not then your due a pair ;)

no need to repeat what others have said, do a compression check, and try different choke settings, and kens idea is genius, as always :)

I still stand by my first post, by the way ... it's always worth checking the compression on an engine which becomes reluctant to start when the weather starts to get cold. That's not to say you shoud immediately order new pistons, roll up your sleeves and take the engine to bits before doing anything else. ;)

Compression testers aren't expensive though.
