I'm wondering if I can make a combination hybrid speedo using the old a new ones. The fuel gauge from the new one and the speedo from the old, in the newer casing?

Sounds like a nice way to have two broken speedo units to me... <grin>

As you suspect, the extra wire on the wiper switch is to allow it to park (it might possibly also 'electrically brake the motor so's it stops more quickly in the right place - I'd need to check.) Bottom line, if you leave that wire out, the wipers will perform an entertaining slow down when the switch is turned off, and you'll have to learn to judge where the best 'turn off' point is...

Correct! Got the same on my 2cv. Other switches, so the wipers can be set in different positions. Never had a problem with them.

Russell,
looks as though converting a 6 volt gauge to work with 12 volts isn't too complicated.
According to the page below, measure the resistance of the 6 volt unit, then find a resistor of the same value rated at about 10 watts.

Indeed Ken, by using a resistance the same as the gauge in series, you'll cause a voltage drop across both components that are equal, therefore 12V will be halved & dropped across each component as 6V - 6V being exactly what Russ needs for his gauge.

That highlights the level of my electrical understanding. I assume when I want to turn something on i press 'on' and when I want it off I press 'off'.

and thats why all the guff is hidden behind the dash and moderns dont have anything to fiddle with under the bonnet you go to dealer and plug in the interface

( most of your questions have been answered- but as i said before most of it is dismantlable so swapping over may be an option. 3rd terminal on the modern is that not an earth?)

The fuel gauge in my old AZU was 6 volt and always worked absolutely fine.

As much as I really do appreciate help and guidance, you might aswell have babelfished this into Norwegian for the amount i understand!

Get your multimeter. (You do HAVE a multimeter, right?)
Set it to the lowest resistance range.
Put it across the two fuel gauge terminals.
Has it gone above the range it can read? Yes? Then turn it up a notch.
When you get a sensible resistance reading, pop down to Maplin and buy a resistor of the same value.
Fix the resistor between the two terminals, and connect the rest up as normal. Make sure nothing can short out.

That's more my language. Resistance range, that's the Ohms thing, with the Omega symbol, right?
