Post Re: 123 ignition + coil
Nobodys ever proved to me why I should spend over a ton on something that makes no difference to my car whatsoever.

Would you spend an extra £500 on a set tyres that promised to be 'rounder than normal tyres' and could never be repaired when they went wrong?

That's just how i see it though.

On the other hand, the coils are an improvement, i've lost count of the coils I've got knocking about that are virtually useless, in my last 2cv I had three on rotation at one point, and now I've got one in the Ami that can't deal with ticking over in the sunshine for more than a few minutes. If I didn't spend all
my money on crack and hookers I'd definately buy one.

The 123 is exceptionally easy to set up. You pull off the points box followed by the bob weights. There are then two little magnets that lip over the pins that used to hold the bob weights. The 123 is held by the same 2 bolts that hold the points box in place. You then lock the flywheel in the manner designed by Citroen, and there is an LED on the 123 to tell you when it is timed up properly.

Personally I've never had an issue with the 123, I like them. Good starting hot or cold.

The whole "fixing by the side of the road" thing is frankly bollocks. Put the points box and the assorted bits in a ziplock bag and throw it in the car. It can be refitted by the side of the road in a matter of minutes, though I've not actually ever had to do so.

Having said all that a 123 isn't a magic cure for a fubarred coil and 2CV coils do like to die slowly...... I'm convinced Shakespeare used to drive a 2CV, how else could he have come up with; When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life?

hmmm, mixed opinions !!

well i will spend some time considering it,

as im still getting to grips with 2cv'ing (hence all the annoying questions i ask) is 123 RELATIVLY easy to do, like removing all you mentioned ?

It is no harder to do the 123 than it is to change a set of points. However as has been pointed out they do cost more than points. It is a question of priorities. If I had a limited budget I wouldn't prioritise a 123 ignition over tyres or brakes or something else essential. For me though it is a genuine improvement, not with standing the fact that points function perfectly adequately.

I've asked the same question to a number of owners and I haven't met one who hasn't praised the electronic ignition. I am told the improvements are smoother running, better mid range performance and better fuel economy.

Post Re: 123 ignition + coil
well being a student and skint constantly and every penny going in to the car atm, fuel economey is one of my goals, so if it is better on fuel (any idea how much?) then count me in!

ive never replaced a points box

doh :(

i know someone who is a genius so i will speak to him about it, and i will consider going for the 123 in the near future

after buying,
4 new wheels (mine are rust at seams)
new brake pads and shoes (going to go for kwik fit lifetime garentee i think..)
get my new wing sprayed
new ignition coil from ecas
take rear left quarter light and have an argument with some rust
123 ignition
then eventually when my chassis (orginial) rots then new chassis

costs are mounting
but i still love my 2cv :)
