Post Re: Pinking
you did do it by marking max advance and timing it at 2.5-3k?

not just used the static point and strobed that?

Chris,
this pic might be of use as well.
The mark to the left is the 'static' mark.

Thats great stuff Ken, I must admit timing with a strobe has always been a real mystery to me, once I learned how to set points using the static firing point and a tent peg I just always did that, as it worked fine and I could never see the point of mucking about with a strobe light.
You've really got a knack for explaining though because now I actually get why it is done and also how - great. I love the little white marks like a rising graph between the static and full advance points, nice touch! 8-)

Chris,
there's really nothing new about the concept of setting the timing at full advance, since that was what we had to do on motorcycles fitted with a magneto.
( Yep, almost half a century ago. )

For starting, or when lugging up a hill, the little lever on the handlebars was pulled back to retard the timing and if you forgot to reset it, the only downside was that the bike lost most of its 'get up and go'.

As far as I'm concerned, the 'pin in hole' method was fine for the early Citroen engines because they're rather understressed, to say the least.
On the other hand, maybe 50% of the engine problems I've seen over the last 30? years of dealing with 602 engines can be attributed to someone making a poor job of setting up the timing, then not noticing or ignoring the sounds of protest the engine has made as it was beaten to death...

Agree but if you ''re-educate'' folks about the advance weights, static setting is not a problem at all. I have never used a timing pistol on A models and don't have any problems with the engines I service.
