Yes that's how I test them but first apply a wire between earth and the green wire/yellow sleeve running back to the indicator to make sure it show full tank. Then stick the sender unit on the wire and move the float from empty to full.

When I said a battery..I didnt mean the car battery but just a small torch/radio/vibrator type of battery ner...
