Post Help, Wobbly gearbox input shaft!
Hi All,
My 2cv (1986) had developing bad clutch slip and looking round the flywheel everything seemed to be coated in a fine mist of oil. Having got the engine out the inside of the bellhousing and all associated bits are covered. It transpires the clutch is both shot as in worn to the rivets and slightly oily wet on both sides. Trying to track the cause I found that I can wobble the input shaft side to side by about 2mm. An engineering guess feels that an input shaft shouldn't wobble at all but can someone who knows for sure just confirm they are not meant to wobble, and that there is an oil seal behind / inside the casing that is therefore likely weeping causing the oil to get out onto the shaft and be thrown arond inside the bellhousing.

Cheers if anyone can help!

There is a bit of give but that sounds too far gone

gearbox end is supported by the bering the engine side by spigot bush

too much play and the return scrill wears out and so oil leaks out

Will just add that the input shaft has no seal you can replace. If bearing is buggered a complete gear box strip down is needed. Spigot bush at the back of the crank shaft can be replaced.

Hey, cheers guys.

I had my suspicions as somehow (and I can only think accident damage) one of the engine to gearbox mounting lug holes and a chunk of the bellhousing had been snapped off and aluminium welded back on. The collett inside the hole was missing and I suspect the engine has been misaligned while fitted, by the sounds of it wearing the scroll return out.

I think the box is about to make its last journey to Mr Pembro for parts!
