Post Re: Rust protection
Thanks james,
I am in Ireland mostly at the moment, way down in the arse end of Kerry..... having used the bitumen paint I reckon I will stick (pun) with that for a while as it is really easy to apply and works very well.

I remember hearing that POR15 can be really bad on large flat panels that may flex, as it is too hard it breaks loose in big pieces.....?????

With regard to acid dipping, I dont think the panel thickness (or lack of :D ) will matter as it is not designed to "eat" the panels.....more the crap on them, if you got rust then you've got rust.....

It doesn't touch the metal at all, apparently the acid is inhibited. It is however completely unforgiving about rust. On that Volvo I thought the passenger side floor might be saveable. When it came back from its first dip it had literally thousands of tiny pinholes in it. I knew it had had water standing in it, but all the pock marks from the corrosion were in fact pinholes.

It isn't just one dip, first they use one solution to remove the paint, then it is dipped to remove the rust it's pretty involved. I think the first strip was about £750, the re dip and E coat just over £1000. If I can afford it I'll probably get the shell on the '66 2CV dipped.

Tectyl. Or veg oil, as once demonstrated by a friend who had used it accidentally on his 250 fifteen years previously - but had brushed it all over the inner rear wings also in an attempt to disperse it. The side which had been 'treated' was quite rot free, the other, which had not, certainly wasn't - in fact there wasn't much left at all.

Exactly, the acid doesn't attack the metal.... a common misconception.

I used to use veg oil and it was good but I thought it needed redoing often in order to keep rust at bay.

The veg oil on the lhs was a pita to remove, and had protected the van just fine over the ten or more winters... prolly helped it was summer when spilt. But I would use tectyl, as the veg didn't want to come off at all, not good when welding nearby.
