 Re: Hot smell on hills
When you're horsing the engine up a hill, is there any hint of the revs going up without a corresponding increase in road speed - ie: clutch slip? That makes a bit of a stink, I understand - an acrid, musty pooey smell...

 Re: Hot smell on hills
could just be the smell of a hot engine something that modern motorists have very little experience of in their climate controlled hermetically sealed box

 Re: Hot smell on hills
Jono, when you mention going 'slowly' up hills, would that be at around 35mph in 3rd or 50mph in 4th, with wide open throttle? Those speeds correspond to the engine's peak torque, so would produce higher instantaneous cylinder pressures than at any other point in the usable rev range. _If_ the seals between the barrels and heads had been compromised at any time in the engine's history, then that's when there'd be most tendency for the joints to start leaking again, even if only slightly...
The method of checking would be to block off the heater intake stubs completely (making sure that the heat escape flaps and tubes were set correctly), then try a few hills under the conditions mentioned earlier.
