What's the best way to grease the steering rack?

When its all apart?

you can reach in if you take the shocker plates off and add an extension to the grease gun or poke about with a stick

do I need to keep that anti-rattle rubber or can I throw it in the bin?

The nipple goes through the middle of the rubber.

it's not just an 'anti-rattle' rubber, as it acts as a packer to eliminate any small amount of play in the rack's sliding bearing.
The older racks used springs instead of rubber.

Any fore and aft play at the inner end of the track rods will result in the road wheels having unwanted movement, toeing in on drive and toeing out on braking.

most 4x4s have the added grease nipple

I fit grease nipples to both the steering pinion housing and the sliding bearing when rebuilding racks.
For the former, it's vital that the rack is disassembled, but for the latter, an M6 nut can be welded to the dust guard without fully dismantling the rack from the axle.
Obviously, the guard plate itself does have to be removed.
The anti-rattle rubber also needs to have a hole punched or drilled in it so that a 45 degree nipple can be screwed in.
Talking of which, I need to send one of those 45 degree items to Adrian for the guard plate which I modified recently...
