 Crunchy 3rd gear synchro
As the heading really. I've read the busted synchro thread, but was wondering how much of a job sorting a crunching 3rd gear would be? I've little in the way of workshop space, mechanical knowledge or cash! Gear box is otherwise nice and quiet - running drums but think was originally disc. Can't recall if it's dyane, acad or 2CV as I went through a bunch before I settled on this one.
If fixing is not so easy, what's the going rate for a known to be good gear box? Been ages since I had to buy one, but I'm quite keen to source one before the run to France if funds allow.
Cheers,
Rumble

 Re: Crunchy 3rd gear synchro
to get at the syncro rings its full stip down and re build, box out the car
not the most difficult as long as you rebuild with all the original shims and spacers etc. could be the cone has gone on the synchro which is essentially get a new box as the parts are prohibitavley ( as opposed to reassuringly...) expensive
you may be able to part exchange the old one against a specialist rebuilt one
dont know the going rate but dont bin the old one as most of it is reusable and some of the internals are not available anymore...pass it on to someone who can re build

 Re: Crunchy 3rd gear synchro
With the amount of miles you do, I'd say you could probably live with it and change gear carefully, for about the next 35 years.
I've had this problem on the Mehari for several years now, but it doesn't seem to be getting any worse. I'm going to continue to live with it until I have to get the box out for some other purpose I think.
I'm sure people will disapprove of this though!

I dare say you're right Jono - however I'd rather run through the summer crunch free. Sourced a good drum box - will try to get it fitted before France. I'd be glad of a hand if you're available.
