High level brake light matey that's what you want. I think that modern drivers subconsciously expect certain things, and as virtually all cars now have those they tend to rely on seeing them before reacting. In the second or so it might take then to realise that you are braking but there is no eye level brake light they have come a heck of a ot closer than they would have.

I've no way of proving this theory, but the higher middle brake light does get seen even when they are too close to see the other two below, which at least means that at junctions, roundabouts and such they won't 'think you had already gone' and run into the back of you, which happened to my dad recently and his car was written off.

yer, i never really noticed high level brake lights until you put one in your car and showed a pic, now i notice them on all cars, even m redge cars!!

i tend to notice the normal brake lights before seeing the eye level, maybe because us lot are alot more aware driving our cars being careful??

i hate crashes!! was in one in august, someone had assumed we had gone left and pulled out into the side of the car!!! dip stick!!

Post Re: My old Blue Bamboo
Dank. What a fabulous word that is...Dank. It conjures up visions of a place that is simultaneously dark and damp, and looking through my front window this morning that's exactly the word that sprang to mind.

I'd already been forewarned, as I'd watched sky news earlier while I had my brew, and despite being absolutely thrilled at the headline news that Katie and Wills want to marry and start a family, (all of which will be financed by us) I was rather more concerned for the fate of those folks in Cornwall experiencing horrendous flooding.

When comparing the good old Lancashire torrential rain with what's happening in Cornwall I shouldn't grumble really. But I will.

The continued use of the 2cv in various weather keeps on revealing different things. Today I was reminded how strong side winds can push the whole plot all over the place, and a new thing revealed itself. I say 'thing' because to use the word problem would be unfair, and incorrect, perhaps inconvenience might be better.

Follow this chain of events and you'll get the picture. When I rebuilt the car I took great pains to make it waterproof, and quiet. Consequently when fitting the vent flap I rolled a little ball of Dum-Dum sealant and placed it upon each of the threaded prongs before mounting the flap. Consequently, as I tightened the small nuts the Dum-Dum squashed into an impenetrable waterproof seal.

The wiper spindles and revolving bits were then replaced with brand new items and fitted with great care to prevent leaks from there.

On the soundproofing front I had replaced the inner bulkhead soundproofing with some one inch thick stuff, over which the rubber floor covering sits. Now I had noticed when driving that the soundproofing was so thick that I had to press the clutch down firmly to the floor in order to get the last bit of movement out of it, and as my clutch pick up point is 'the moment it leaves the floor' I really need to get that pedal all the way down.

I figured that with use the soundproofing would flatten out and all would settle in fine which it did, sort of. The problem is that you do need to consciously bury your foot into the carpet so to speak if you are to engage first gear without a graunch. With today's weather throwing the rain sideways in a wind that appeared to make it jet-propelled rain, I put on some nice chunky Rockport boots before setting out.

Rockport boots are something I'm not used to. Yes they're waterproof and warm but also very clunky, and difficult to drive in as it turned out as I couldn't feel when the clutch was fully down or not. I've drove myself daft today with the number of bad gear changes that I've made. Once I got going though I was very impressed with the little car's willingness to chug along quietly in the worst of weathers, including the fording of several huge puddles and one proper, possibly two foot deep gathering of water which was under a railway bridge.

Everything went well, and gear changes apart I congratulated myself on owning what is possibly one of the few watertight 2cv's in the land. They all leak a little, but as the rain and wind continued to jet-wash the car for a good hour or so there still wasn't so much as a single hint of a drip from the usual 'somewhere under the windscreen' area. I felt chuffed.

Image

On the ride home however, I was facing in the same direction for plenty miles. The wind was howling and the rain lashing constantly at the drivers side resulting in the leak above where the wind had forced water under the side glass. Only to be expected I suppose given the appalling weather, but interesting all the same how these little foibles keep coming to light.

my car is now water tight!!

the strange water i had pissing in when turning a corner, incidently comes from the vent flap. it gets through the seal, sits in the lip of the flap above the box section, and when you turn a corner it gathers up and then pisses in, so my next job is to seal the rubber to the vent properly, and then it wont leak at all!!!!!!!

i tend to find if you have the window open on the clip things i see you also have, it helps a bit, but ive never had full on sideways rain for that long i geuss

I don't believe in water tight 2cv's (driving over 25 years in 2cv's I never had one which was water tight!!!)

well, to an extent it is, it is pretty much there now, it only leaks if it really really throws it down, and when that hapens it leaks through the rear window.. but the front of the car is bone dry ;)

i believe a car shouldny be neither, if it can be made water proof then great, however, if all efforts are to no effect then sod it, let it leak!! i try to keep the inside of my car as dry as possible!
i find that 500ml?? coke bottles 2 each side, gives the matt a ramp so to speak, which keeps the water on the matt not going under it and sitting there damp!

Defeatist! ;)

Nope, there's not a drop comes in now from the front, which I am very surprised but happy to say. Here's a pic of my makeshift foil muff put on there until I can make a proper one out of the left over bit of material that comes with a new roof. I'll do that this weekend.
